In 1973 Jim purchased Schaefer Funeral Home in Marysville, Washington, which became Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home.

Jim served the grieving families of Marysville for the rest of his life. He had a special love for the Tulalip Tribes, and caring for their families. He always worked hard to make sure everyone was taken care of and brought deep compassion and professionalism to his position.

He served as a volunteer fireman and Captain with the Marysville Fire Department for many years. He served on the Everett Community College Board and was involved in Marysville Lions, Crystal Masonic Lodge and many other local organizations. In 1976 he was elected to the Washington State Senate, but lost the election by a handful of votes.

While Master of Crystal Lodge#122 in 1979, WB Jim promised to write a history of our lodge for the Centennial Celebration in 2002. He did.
